My dad and I always enjoyed hiking or running together, and every couple years we would do the 12 mile Oak Hill Mine Trail from Calistoga to Pope Valley in California, an old stage coach pass. Since my dad's back has been bad, I have missed doing this challenging mountain pass with him. My post birthday buzz in the morning after my birthday gave the right space to wake up in the morning decide to walk the 14 miles to the next town north, Neenah, where my car was parked. The road is rural and part of it runs along Lake Winnebago. I had enjoyed this driving very much.
A few years ago I could hardly walk a mile or two without tiring, but I was feeling it.
I left around 10am and got to my car in Neenah around 4pm. It was a beautiful experience. It was in the high 60s after days of highs of 40. I am so in love with Wisconsin's natural areas, and it was when the ground was just beginning to thaw and various forms of life were just considering returning after the long winter.
I wrote a journal and took pictures, drank the hot tea I had brought, stretched, ate food I had made, and seriously geeked out about the nature - the lake, the trees, the birds. I noticed how much a crow's wings look like eyelashes batting. I will add the notes from my walk when I find them!
